It’s time for the second week of the sew along for Project Run & Play. This week’s theme is Stripes and Polka Dots, which leaves it wide open to interpretation – so much fun!
I made this another upcycled dress; re-using a pair of charcoal oxford striped pants and some pink polka dot fabric from my stash. I bought this fabric to serve as a tablecloth for Arden’s Pink 3rd birthday party and then used it for Hadley’s ladybug Halloween costume.
For the dress, I was inspired by sailor pants with the button flap front. I moved the flap up to the top of the dress and made it into the closure.
It’s such fun taking pictures with Arden now that she’s become more cooperative and even comes up with her own poses and action moves! She’s taking preschool ballet and was showing off her point-retiré excercise – her new favorite move. I would have loved to take pictures at the river near our house with the tall ship that is docked there, but it’s too cold for outdoor shoots right now.
I’m planning to draft another in a 2T to make for Hadley, and perhaps even more sizes to make a sewing pattern to offer. Hmmm, I see some girls in cute dresses in my future! I think this would be a very versatile dress since you could easily change up the look by making it without a contrast fabric and the style could be short sleeved, sleeveless, pockets, piping – you name it!

What a sweet and adorable dress! Love the pics.
I love the idea of a sailor opening for the top of a dress instead of a pant! very creative.
This turned out great!! I seriously was drafting a pair of train conductor bibs for my boy, unfortunately they weren’t in the cards this week and failed failed failed lol … so glad it worked out well for you!
That is a very cute dress. I love how you made the front! She is adorable in her poses. Makes is much more fun to take pictures when they actually cooperate. 😉
A great idea, turned out really cute!
Awww, so cute! The flap closure is a neat idea. I also like how the pink pops off of the green background.
